So I've been a bit out of the loop in terms of processors lately. Until I read some articles on anandtech which compares the i7 to the phenom 2s and the previous quad core qxxx generations ( I forgot all the names like kentsfield and penryn and such ). Anyways I was pretty shocked to find out that the i7 really only holds an overall 10-20% speed boost over previous quad core generations and really only has a big boost in video encoding and such. Is this the general concensus of everyone?

Should I still recommend i7s to friends that are strictly wanting gaming systems and can get a cheap deal on previous quad core generations? Also what happened to the huge native quad core advantage a lot of people were boosting back in the day?

You must also remember the i7 can overclock very easily... my i7 d0 is running at 4.4ghz daily on water, and it would easily do 4.0ghz on air... I could never do that with my q6600... plus hyperthreading gives you 8 cores, turbo mode gives better performance on dual core games... etc...

I love my i7 build vs. my previous q6600 build..

which i7 do you have? I'm assuming by your numbers the pricey i7-975 extreme which runs at 3.33 ghz in which case a stable 25%+ OC on air is as impressive as the q6600 g0s getting a 25% stable OC on stock voltages. If you have the i7-950 that would be even more impressive with a 33%+ OC.

Anyone have any other comments on the i7s performance compared to the older quad core generation?

One of my friends recently got a i7 920 and left it at 2.66 stock with a brand spanking new geforce 260 core 216 and was VERY dissapointed he only got 16,150 in 3dmark06. In comparison I even thought he would get higher then his old system which was a q6600 at 3.2 ghz with a 8800 gt which got a 14,500. Keep in mind this is all with the latest drivers and everything, does this sound about right to everyone?

Mind posting your motherboard settings. Mine is being flakey and doesnt want to go past 4.2. Still trying to figure out whats going on with this board. My last board overclocked great, new one, not so much.

*edit. My q6600 had a 50% overclock on air, my current i7 920 is doing 4.2ghz daily.

would you say both your q6600 and i7 920 are 100% torture test stable? any crashes?

If they are 100% stable, wow for a 58% OC for your i7 920 is very impressive indeed! all on air?

Veedub is running a water cooling setup. We have another guy on the forums who has a 920 D0 revision at 4.2 daily on a TRUE.

Well from our superpi thread comparing clock for clock at 4.1ghz

q6600: 12.45
i7: 9.72

q9300 @ 4ghz: 10.94

4.1 was about the top end for the q6600 while we have i7's running at 4.6

21,131 | Dainius | Q6600 @ 3.904GHz | GTX280 SLI @ 715/1500 | XP Pro 32-bit |ORB
20,951 | AP4LIFETN | Core i7 920 @ 4.0GHz | GTX 280 @ 697/1518/2500 | Server 08 64bit | ORB

but keep in mind the q6600 had 2 cards while the i7 just had one.

I actually didnt touch hardly anything... upped vcore to ~1.36 and lightly raised a few other voltages... the board does not want to do anything over 4.5ghz though.... but that runs too hot for my tastes 24/7... my 4.4 is with hyperthreading off, although with it on, it runs fine if I up vcore a little more, but the temps get too close to 80 for me then too... my q6600 would only do 3.5 but that was on air, and it is very warm in our house... If i get time i'll post specifics for you vdub..
