Um, they mean the same thing. The 4870 is usually cheaper while being slightly better.

The best answer I can give you is, either I went for a 260, while someone else I know went for a 4870; they're both great cards for their price.

The HD 4870 1gb is faster as in it performs better. I wasn't referring to the cards specifications.

Here is a nice comparison for you. They are close.
Some people like nvidia and some like ati and to some it does not matter.

I would get whichever was cheaper. Unless you want to run fold on your computer, then I would spend a little extra on a gtx260 core216 since its a good bit faster at that.

This article uses newer drivers so the results are a little more accurate. It shows the Hd 4870 1gb beating the GTX 260 Core 216 in 11 of the 12 games they tested.
