I restored back to Friday, which is both the furtherest restore point I have saved and the day before I erased programs.

Didn't work. D and E still missing.

I haven't used my CD/DVD drives in a while, its possible its been like this longer. I honestly don't know.

It's a Dell Dimension 3000 Desktop. Some specs:

when you tried to update the drivers did you allow xp to look online or search windows update for updated drivers?

Did a little more googling and I found a fix. It seems to have worked.

I ran a file in the first post on this blog and it worked. Downloaded, ran a few steps, restarted computer and it recognizes the D and E drives.

Excellent. Windows update did indeed have the proper driver.
