Computer Case

Airflow, layout, space inside, size, cable management, etc. Those are the major factors that come to mind.

You're right, that does sound like a really stupid question :p (jk)

Mostly to prevent things spilling on the components, or accidentally touching the components (a must if you have pets/kids), to provide good cooling (airflow), to prevent dust buildup, to keep the stuff in an organised small space (like cables).

Cases are a good place to store all of your PC Hardware, HeHeHe :D

I look at it like this. I have a couple thousand in hardware so why not have a really nice case to show it all off :D

A lot of people here will agree, because they're cheap and made mostly with plastic.

imo the single most important job of a case for heavy hardware is air flow and/or room for water cooling.

other options come after in priority (imo)

these are in no order below:
removable tray
tooless
looks
size
quality in matrials
ease of use (how easy to work with)
ect ect ect

the last thing you want to do is buy a case on looks alone.
apevia cases seemed to be marketed at the "non-edJUCATED" pc crowd.

While alienware cases have a look that many people like they generally have poor airflow which is what you need when pushing your hardware to its limits.

I prefer a more simple clean look with good airflow over a case that looks good.
If you can get both, that would be ideal but looks are a personal preference.
