they have a new driver as of Jan 2009. give it a shot.
CMI8738 Windows XP/2000 CMI8738 driver for Windows XP/2000
C-Media Company Information

Does it show up in device manager?
Are you sure you connected the speakers correctly to the sound card?
Any chance of the volume being muted?

Thanks Hefe, I downloaded that file a couple of nights ago. When trying to install, it asked me to install the PCI card .... it is installed, unable to continue the update ?

First off, uninstall the existing drivers, you will be reinstalling them later.

Secondly, ground yourself before going into the case. (Assuming that your PC is grounded, you can ground yourself by just keeping one hand in contact with the bare metal frame (not a painted or coated surface) of the computer case.)

Thirdly, go inside the case and make sure it is firmly pushed in, make sure all of the gold connectors are connected completely.
Just open it up, and push it down firmly on all sides, but you shouldn't have to push hard at all.

After trying that, open up device manager by doing one of the following -

* Click Start, click Run, and then type devmgmt.msc
* Right-click My Computer, click Manage, and then click Device Manager.
* Right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
* Type the following command at a command prompt:
start devmgmt.msc

First thing to do once your in Device Manager - Click Action, "Scan for hardware changes".
Now that you've done that, you should see the device under either of the following -
* Other Devices
* Sound, Video, and game controllers

Note, it may have a exclamation point next to it, or a yellow question mark.
Either way, your going to try and install the drivers.

Go ahead and try to install the drivers. Give it a test.

If it does not work, try the following -
* Disconnect the card from the existing PCI slot, and firmly put it in a different PCI slot.
* Make sure the card is not in any contact with static (From yourself), so make sure to ground yourself to prevent any harm to the card. You can do this by touching a unpainted piece of metal on your case as said above.

Let me know how everything goes, and let me know what you see or what comes up.
Good luck and thanks!

Hi Tenenbaum,

Tried all that, no sound. I finished up installing an old sound blaster card I had sitting on a shelf, it is operating to my satisfaction .... problem solved.

Thanks to all for responding, appreciated.
