Right now, he is looking at some kind of acer. He hasn't showed it to me yet, but he did show it to another friend, and that friend said it had some kind of 1GB radeon card. Unfortunately this friend doesn't know anything about radeon cards. I don't know what could be in there that is 1GB when the laptop is only $650. Ok, the one he is looking at is this: Newegg.com - Acer Aspire AS6530-5753 NoteBook AMD Turion X2 Ultra ZM-82(2.20GHz) 16" Wide XGA 4GB Memory DDR2 667 320GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 - Laptops / Notebooks

Anyway, he told me he could go up to $1000, but I don't think he is going to do it. It seemed like he would do $800 though. Could you guys give me some different recommendations. ranging between $700 and $1000 with a target area of $800ish so I can show him his options? I'm going to look for some too, but I've never had a laptop before, so I like some recommendations from other people.

Edit:
I would tell him this one: Newegg.com - MSI GX630-028US NoteBook AMD Athlon X2 QL-62(2.00GHz) 15.4" Wide XGA 4GB Memory 250GB HDD DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT - Laptops / Notebooks but the reviews say the wireless on it is horrible.

Maybe these:
Newegg.com - MSI GX620-001US NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo P8400(2.26GHz) 15.4" Wide XGA 4GB Memory 320GB HDD DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT - Laptops / Notebooks
Newegg.com - ASUS N50 Series N50Vn-X6 NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo P8400(2.26GHz) 15.4" Wide XGA 4GB Memory 320GB HDD DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce 9650M GT - Laptops / Notebooks

These benches show the 9600 GT far superior to the HD 3650: Product review: The GeForce 9600 GT and Radeon HD 3650 (page 4: Enemy Territory : Quake Wars) - BeHardware

I got the MSI. However same build but with better display. I am rather happy with it.

What do you mean better display?

I'm kinda leaning toward the Asus because of the 9650 GT. It's clocked higher I believe, and it has 1GB of Vram instead of 512MB. I can't tell if it is GDDR2 or GDDR3.
