Hello, I am helping out my Dad with his computer which is running a bit slowly lately. He is low on storage space on his HD and can't correctly perform a disk defragmenter. I was hoping to persuade him to get another hard drive and update the RAM which ought to help him out. However, I am needing to find out what kind of RAM to get him. The information I found on the computer is as follows... Thank You.

It would be so much easier if you could just tell us the model computer, lol. Like a Dell Inspiron whatever. :p

I'm going to assume it's using PC133 RAM, but if you could give us the make and model that would be awesome.
 
The type of ram your mobo takes is 168 pin ddr sdram at 133. Your maximum allowed memory to be installed is 768, as it stands now you have 512mb installed. As far as the memory goes you will only be allowed to put in another 256mb which isn't much but it answers your question. So if your looking for more memory, your looking for 168pin DDR SDRAM 133mhz.

Edit: Hikarcloud is right, those system specs are a little iffy, if you could give the model of the computer it would be easier.
 
Well, I wish I could give a model number for the computer, but he had it built awhile back and can't locate the receipt or breakdown of what they put into the computer. So, I tried googling the motherboard and found that program... SiSoftware Sandra Lite 2009.SP3c to scan the computer for its hardware makeup.

Edit: I was wondering how you knew it was 168 PIN. That's what I was looking for but couldn't find it. I see where you are getting the 133 mhz. Thanks.
 
Ah, I see...hmm.

See, the problem here is that it says your motherboard can support a max of 768mb of RAM (256mb each slot) in 3 slots. Yet it also says there's a 512mb stick in one of the slots. I'm wondering if it's accurate or not. I would download CPU-Z and check what is says about your memory.

Personally though, I think it's time for an upgrade. You can build a nice machine for decently cheap nowadays, depending on your needs. Upgrading this machine is really a waste of money...after you buy this RAM and a decent sized HDD, you'll be putting at the very least 75 bucks into this, and you could put that towards something much nicer. Forgetting the fact that 256mb of extra RAM won't really do anything for you.

I used the easiest info finder on the internet: my friend Google. I searched for VIA Technologies, Inc. , Model : P4X266E-8235.

Anyways, cpu-z will be your friend in this situation to provide the most accurate information. Would you be willing to upgrade your machine? Yours seems fairly dated and we could spec you a build pretty cheap if you are willing. It would be well worth it and to be honest, you will see a lame increase in performance by putting in 256mb of ram.

133mhz is PC133, which is 168 pin SDRAM. I've worked with so many different types of RAM I'm like an encyclopedia to borderline useless RAM knowledge. :p

Or you know, james decided to use google, which works too, lol.
 
Thank you. I actually am trying to persuade my dad to upgrade his computer. I had planned on using the case and two CD Drives. That means I would need:

CPU
Motherboard
RAM
PSU
HD Drive

He has his original Windows XP Profressional CD with the product key so I figure he could save money by using that. His monitor is a nice 19" LCD full screen, so no need to replace that. Thanks again, if you have a better solution or alternate idea, let me know.
