RAM Question

I was recently looking at a mobo and its specs. The specs said it had 4 expansion slots for ram and the specs also said that the maximum ram the board would support is 16GB of ram. I looked around for ram but the maximum ram stick I could find was 2GB of ram which would leave a potential of 8GB of ram unused on the board???? Why is this, is this to future proof the board incase they introduce 4GB ram sticks?? I am very puzzled can someone explain.

They don't have 4gb sticks out yet really. But they are in the works, I'm sure. Some boards support up to 8gb sticks in each slot, lol.
