Building First Computer; Advice Needed.

Nice, yeah, I will see and if I find some more $$$ I think I will go with the i7, but for right now, I think I want to set up a rig around the Q6600 Quad Core.

Do you have any feelings toward the Gigabyte GA-EP45C-DS3R motherboard?

Btw, thank you for all the help you have been so far. It's good to be able to sit and chat with someone who has done this before

gigabyte makes good boards as well as biostar and asus.

Unfortunately I ran amd cpus during the socket 775 time so I have no experience with any of these boards.

Keep in mind if you do want to eventually go for an i7 you would need to replace your cpu, mb and ram.

If you planned on doing this sooner than later I would build i7 now.

If you go with your proposed build I would plan on running it for at least 2 years.
At that point in time who knows what options you will have.

Yeah this was a double post of the one previous...

So you Suggest going with the i7 now, because if I go with the Q6600 I will probably have to update within 2 years?

So do you think the i7 would last me through 4 years? Basically all of college.

refer to my previous post. When the US guys get up they will have some great advice on a socket 775 board for you.

No the q6600 could last you all throughout college. It is just that the costs of upgrading to an i7 from a socket 775 board is almost as much as a new build.

ok cool, I'm going to post the revised build for anyone else who wants to look and have a say. Also is the monitor just personal preference? I suppose I would want a nice one..... Anyways

that has been stretched pretty far for your budget, 100 over. (well 80 over actually) but it is an awesome build and would last you a long time. Otherwise i would go with the amd x3 system which should save you a fair bit of cash.

Ok for some reason i failed to see this second page, if you need a quad i wouldn't go with the q6600, use a newer quad, also that motherboard is pretty old, the ds3 series was released when p45 was new, there are much better boards out. You could go with a q8400 which is cheap on newegg, but i reckon you could fit in a nice amd x4 rig.

Cool, I was wondering though, what is the difference between say the i7 and the Q9550? Just want to learn a little bit more, this stuff is interesting.

Also the PSU. You guys have recommended a few different ones, and I have heard that is one of the most underestimated part of the system. How do you guys go about choosing the right one?

And now that you guys have helped me past the hardware, I was wondering, do you guys recommend something like overclocking? I have read a little bit about it and it seems like a good idea, as long as you are careful

Also, would it be worth it for me to spend the extra $50 to get 8 GB ram?

EDIT
Also, if I was willing to spend the extra $$$ would it be worth it to have the i7 over the Q9550. I compiled two wish lists on newegg, one with the Q9550 and 4GB Ram Q9550 (Also with this build I can get the motherboard and processor from Portatech for $300 Here. So it would be about $100 cheaper than the price on the wishlist.

Here is the i7 build, 6GB Ram. Here
