Sub Box Build

I know some of you found my post on the desk i built interesting, or maybe not. Either way, I thought i'd share the sub box i just build this weekend.

I went into this knowing nothing about sub boxes, or how to build them. I also didn't plan this one like my desk and just did everything on the fly. That was a mistake. It caused a bunch of headaches and made me waste a lot of material. I did an okay job of it, but here it is.

Never used a router before this. Came out okay. Almost set the thing on fire. HAHA.

I've also learned that flies love the smell of MDF for some reason.

Sub test fit.

Test fit with amp placement. Just to get a general idea.

Reinforcing the EFF out of this thing. Just to be safe.

Side veiw. Plenty of screws here. lawl

Terminal cup placement. Using epoxy to attach it from the inside.

Front of the box together on the left, makita on the right.

Test fit after placing the front on the box. Needed to make sure nothing was in the way. I had one of the two by twos running just along the inside.

Test fit in the trunk. This is the most important part, as im building this box because the old one was HUGE.

This is the result of me deciding not to plan anything out, like a noob. Thankfully i was able to get everything put together without having to run to the store for more material. In the front you can see the old box, which i demolished in order to use the front as a template for the hole.

Here's the rear of the box after adding the felt. I used 3m spray adhesive and it worked out pretty well. I've never done this before, so the edges came out kinda crappy, but w/e.

Here's the front with the sub screwed in (i used a putty like weatherstripping to seal the sub) and the amp to the right. Interior lighting sucks with the iphone but it was already dark outside so...

And here's the last piece of the puzzle. All complete and placed in the trunk. All i need to do is get the amp wires, run them and then we'll see if this thing performs as well as the old box. It may not because the old box was a band pass, but i dont care. The space in my trunk is all i wanted back.

Hmm.... I hope you know, that at the top and bottom, because of how it is built, are very weak... You will eventualy get air leaks...

i forgot to mention that all sides (inside and out) are completely sealed with Silicone II. Multiple layers even.

oh, and the top and bottom are screwed into 2x2s cut at a 45 degree angle

Ok, because from what I saw... It would have leaked, silicone isn't great for sealing things like that if there is a large gap... It is only really used to help it bond and to fill small cracks to help keep air from leaking... I usualy just use liquid nails to do that though...

Ok, because from what I saw... It would have leaked, silicone isn't great for sealing things like that if there is a large gap... It is only really used to help it bond and to fill small cracks to help keep air from leaking... I usualy just use liquid nails to do that though...

That's a good idea. If i start having any issues, i may see if i can do that. There were no major gaps in it really just small spots that needed to be sealed anyway. Even on those i but around three thick coats of the stuff. So it should hold. If not, ill take care of it. Thanks for the advice.

nice...later on ill be doing something more advanced, custom built box and everything.

Just remember bigger = better.

A crap box can cripple a sub...not psuh it to its full potential.

Bigger is only better for certain types of music though. I miss being able to build my own boxes. No tools, no garage anymore. Thinking about replacing the crapcacular pioneer banpass box with a custom built jl w3 10. Also, liquid nails is your friend when building speaker boxes

I would love to do something like this....but with a nicer vehicle and nicer installation.
