Gaming computer

The specs so far are:

E8500
Asus P5Q Pro
XFX HD 4890 1gb
500gb Western Digital SE16
4gb Kingston HyperX ram
Pioneer 20x dvd-rw

Not sure as to which PSU - something around 650 watts
Antec Three Hundred case.

How good/bad is this as a gaming computer, with the possibility of overclocking and value/longevity in mind? And are quads a better idea - the Q9400 perhaps?

Quads blow for gaming, e8500, or 8400 for OCing is better. If you oc, you'll need a cpu cooler.

Corairs are nce, but check the sticky for a psu.

two great psu companies are corsair and pc power and cooling.

Either one will do you just fine.

What is your budget and what else will you be doing besides gaming?

Quad cores are nice for a lot of multitasking. If not a dual core will be great.

Quads are better, future resistant so to say. Tone down the ram, you don't need that much. It looks fine otherwise.

true you do not "really" need 4gb but with how the prices are on ddr2 there is no reason not to get 4gb.

Of course with a 1gb gpu you would want to run a 64bit os with 4gb of ram.

Given it would give a longer lifespan would it be worth forking out an extra £35/$50(unfortunately we never get stuff at us prices)/20% for the q9400 b/c it seems some can get theirs up to 4ghz on air cooling alone... Surely that would last for years in real life, and be as fast as the e84/500.
