When seeing this message should I just write off the HDD as bad and the data being unrecoverable? I've tried using an IDE to USB external enclosure with no luck. Should I tell this person that all their data is gone or, depending on the importance of the data and amount of $ willing to be spent, send it to a data recovery specialist?

I have a friend that did that once and it made the situation worse. I'll try it with this one since the other had a different error message. Any other suggestions?

I hooked the HDD into the enclosure and left it, watching the led change from a quick flash of green to a long sustained red, I can now see the drive in "my computer" but can't even get to the properties menu for it; it just sits and says "not responding". I'm afraid to disconnect for fear of never getting this far again but I think it's a moot point since just 'cause I see it doesn't mean I'll ever be able to access it.

IMO, there are probably far to many bad sectors on the drive. If you have a copy of spinrite or know someone that does, you can try to use that to check for bad sectors and attempt to recover data from them... But I have a feeling the drive is dead.

I will try the chkdsk. I left it plugged in overnight and now get a message that says: F:/ is not accessible. Error performing inpage operation.
I will let you know what the chkdsk says.

I just purchased SpinRite. Can I use this on more than one machine? I will definitely create a boot disk...
