So when you insert a movie DVD, does the icon in My Computer change at all? Does it even recognise the fact that there's a disc there?

I'm just trying to work out if the DVD side of the laser is working...

no,it does npot change or recognise the dvd,but it will play cds

Did you get your firmware update from Optiarc or Acer?

could not find any on acer site,downloaded dx14 from internet ,not sure what site,it said it was for the optiarc ad-7560a

From what I've read, the DX14 firmware should work fine with your drive.

Did the problem start exactly at the point you downgraded from Vista to XP?
