Something burning in my dell dimension 8400

OK ... new ... hello ... Dimension 8400 ... 5 years old ... dead ... just bought PSU and tried that ... nothing ... so it may be mtb or cpu ... I am sad ... I really need the data on the HD ...most important ... I have old Dell computer ... tempted to try the HD switch ... but Windows versions not same ... what is the best way to secure the data on the HD ... from what I have read ... sounds like I need to pass on this computer ... and get another ... but I really really need my data ... thanks for the help ... life seems to have stopped ... until I solve this ... John
