I'm working on another machine of mine and I need a new graphics card. Here are the specs:

AMD 64 3200+ Socket 754
eVGA nForce 3 Mobo
eVGA GeForce 6800 128MB AGP
2GB PC3200 Corsair Value Ram
520 Watt Aspire PSU

I myself am building a new machine for a LAN Party I'm going to but my brother is coming as well, and he uses the above machine. It runs great on most games, COH, Warcraft 3, all the Battlefields etc.. but we are also wanting to play Crysis and Empire Total War. Crysis runs but its a little choppy even in the lowest settings. It is by all means playable but I am worried if we get into a multiplayer setting with a lot of movement the lag and choppiness will be unbearable for him. Same for Empire Total War, although we haven't tested that game.

We would have just updated the whole machine but he really doesn't want to pay $350 for a new Mobo, Ram, CPU, and Video Card, which is what it would take with that Socket 754 chip. If it were 939, we would have been fine. And we can't just swap out the Video Card cause its AGP...

But we are going to switch out the mobo for a socket 754 w/PCI-E and get a new video card. There are plenty of 754 Boards on eBay for $20-$30 new w/PCI-E we just need to know what type of video card this thing could handle and what kind of prices we are looking at? He doesn't want to spend over $100 cause that would just defeat the purpose. Used or New it doesn't really matter as long as it works.

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks

If you move fast and aren't afraid of open box, nab this:
Newegg.com - Open Box: POWERCOLOR AG3850 512MD3-P Radeon HD 3850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X HDCP Ready Video Card
Basically the best GPU for AGP.

Since you are running a 754, finding a mobo with PCI-E that doesn't cost more than a decent card would be hard to do. Newegg doesn't even have any.

That's not a bad deal for an AGP Card. I am surprised Newegg still has some. I might snatch that one up.

Here are a couple of "BuyNow" mobos I found on eBay.

I have no idea whether any of these would work, but here are few I found with PCI-E

PCPartner RX480MK7-A64X SOCKET 754 MOTHERBOARD - eBay (item 350185261265 end time Apr-30-09 00:19:15 PDT)

New PC CHIPS A31G Socket 754 AMD Athlon 64 Motherboard - eBay (item 390041605624 end time Apr-12-09 16:44:43 PDT)

New MSI K8N NEO3 Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce4 Motherboard - eBay (item 390041421095 end time Apr-11-09 20:45:35 PDT)

NEW! ECS GOAL3+ Sempron 3000+ CPU Socket 754 MATX MB - eBay (item 380113796044 end time Apr-04-09 01:30:51 PDT)

If I do go PCI-E is there a level of card I should stay away from? Meaning will the slow CPU choke out the GPU at a certain level?
