I think US vs Canadian prices are almost on par, maybe like 8:10 ratio or so.

Anyway, my friend wants to make a build with $1000, just the tower. I know that's plenty enough to get a beefy bang-for-buck build. No overclocking, nothing fancy.

I've been way out of the loop for a long time now, I've kept up with graphics cards, but I'm totally behind on mobos, cpus, memory, etc.

There used to be a budget thread that was sticky'd showing various options for different budgets, what happened to it?

Anyway, someone mind recommending a build for that amount?

The graphics card is there in between the memory and the psu. It's listed as a combo deal because it comes with a free game.

Your build looks good too, G31 chipset isn't that great though. But it will do, since he isn't overclocking.

Oh, and that optical drive you listed is IDE, you'll want SATA ;)

Not sure if that other build includes tax and S&H which are both pretty significant here in Canada.

Where are you buying from? If outside of BC then buy from ncix.com instead of newegg.ca. Nothing wrong with newegg.ca but they charge an arm and a leg for shipping and handling. I saved over a $100 on my last build ($500) total shopping at ncix.com vs newegg.ca.

Also, ncix.com has a price match feature, use these links for the price match AFTER you add all the items to your cart at ncix.com but re-check the prices before you enter them as I rounded them off for ease of use:

thanks guys, I decided to make a build over at DirectCanada, I've bought from them before and have been very satisfied. Some things are cheaper or more expensive than other sites, but the free shipping for >$300 purchases balances that out, and I'd rather we get everything from one place all at once.

$1,078.91 including shipping, tax and insurance

If u get an e8400 , u might as well overclock it. That's pretty much what they're meant for. It's SOOO EASY!!
All u need is a descent heatsink

That's a decent build....I've had serious issues with directCanada before, RMA's with them were a nightmare, i could not get replies to any emails, phone messages etc...I'll never buy from them again.

Just an FYI, I linked all the difference places because ncix.com has a price match guarantee. If you add all those items to your cart at ncix.com they allow you to link to other stores that cell it for cheaper and will match the prices. Therefore you're buying from one place but getting the lowest price on all items. And ncix.com's customer care is top notch, bettered only by newegg.ca in my opinion.

Either way, you'll be happy with your system, the P45 will OC the e8400 well. hopefully you have nothing to RMA :p
