Can you build a decent complete system for ~500?

Nah, not likely. 5 years ago was 2004, XP came out in 2001, matey. It probably has XP on it.

Let's hope at least.

Yea.. it's XP... but not much is worth salvaging... it was a ~$300 barebones dell package when they bought it... so you can probably imagine it's a little outdated... I have an old XP disk from my previous computer... will probably just use that. I appreciate the build, I emailed it to my mom... she has no idea what it is, but the price fits what they were going to spend on a lesser system..

Yeah, that build will serve them well. Just use that XP disk, and you're golden.
