There is Speed Fan, CoreTemp and i think RealTemp as well.

ok, i think i have it figured out. the system temp is at 34 degrees C and the CPU temp is at 79 degrees C!!!!!!! now how do i go about fixing it?

which temp did you end up using? What kind of cpu fan/cooler do you have? What kind of thermal paste did you use?

Right now i have the factory cpu fan/cooler that the cpu came with. it also came with some crappy thermal paste that looks pretty bad right now. u think that putting fresh thermal paste on it will work?

Putting fresh thermal paste could help. If that doesnt help bring down the temps any looks to a after market heatsink/fan setup.

are you overclocking? what is the cpu voltage?
I used arctic silver during build. E6850 temps in low 30's C, I'm not oc'ed; when I do 3.3ghz temps climb in the 40's. I'm not saying for sure if its your termal paste but it's a possibility. here's some good info from forums http://www.techist.com/forums/f77/big-problem-cpu-thermal-paste-181319/
I use Zalman fan http://www.techist.com/forums/f10/rate-wire-management-above-you-150446/index200.html ,but some don't likey:eek:. When I compare the asus probe temp sensors that came with the motherboard software it shows my temps in high 20'sC. I trust core temp's over asus'

cool, im gonna pick up some thermal paste tomorrow and try that. hopefully it works.

what is the best way to get the old termal paste off?

Honestly, the absolute best product to remove thermal paste and purify the CPU IHS & HS is:
ArctiClean by Arctic Silver

Get both the cleaner and purifier. The cleaner is a citrus based product that is INCREDIBLE at breaking down any thermal material so it easily just wipes off with a few wipes. The purifier removes left-over residue.

I've tried every suggestion and NOTHING works faster or better than that. I've had those for about 3 years and I wouldn't use anything else. (I sound like an infomercial. lol)

Seriously, though... It's the best.
