hey my friend wants to build an i7 rig for $900. i keep telling him that it will be too close, but he wanted me to ask anyway.

no need for OS, Monitor, mouse or keyboard

Keep in mind I don't know if your friend is a gamer or not. So depends on what video card and X58 motherboard he would need. I'm just throwing this build out there for an example of what he can get.

Everything has free shipping except for the case. Total comes to $1,025.88, not including mail in rebates, $80 worth. I think it's the closest you can get to a $900 i7 build without skimping out on quality parts.

I know that the Asus P6T and i7 920 will run you a tad over $500 on newegg, which gives you $400, you could go with a nicer brand case+PSU combo, and 4870 (512 MB) and 3 GB of ram into that amount of money, if i was him I'd just save another $100 and then get an i7 rig so he'd have better headroom

Drop down to a 4830 or 4850 and you would be right around the budget. Video cards are easy enough to upgrade later and both those cards are still great and very cheap. If hes not a gamer drop down even lower.

get a 8600GTS if he's an average gamer. sure he can't play on max but my friend plays games like CoD 4, CoD WaW, UT3 and WoW with me all the time and he says it's fine on medium settings with a Q6600.
