just look around things like
www.compgeek.com or www.pricewatch.com or any sort of bidding or low price online. www.egghead.com used to be good, but not sure if its around anymore. You can build your own FAR cheaper. The only thing that may cost more is getting you legitimate copy of the o/s and other software bundles, as they normally have contractual discounts.

lol, you keep posting at the same time as me so i can't read your post before i post.

the thing with amd is that i want a 64bit cpu so i can take advantage of it with my os. i know microstf doesn't support it (yet), but linux already does.

i could make you a rig for 1700 taht would blow ur mind if u really wanted me to.. it would just take me a bit to figure it out.

if any of you could possible attempt to configure me a basis on which to build on that'd be great...i have no clue which mobo i want, or which case, or which cpu (i only know that i want an a64...i was thinking maybe a 3500?)

amd 64bit 3500
nvidia 6800 ultra
2 raptors
a nice mobo probably asus or abit
2 gb memory pc 3200/400 or higher(kingston, crucial, or a high end brand)
and thats a good start

how much would all that cost? and i really need to know which mobo to get, since i know nothing about them... is pci-e a good tech to invest in?

also, i have no need for 2gb's of ram.

Ok dude here is a computer that I think is pretty fast and would be under $1725:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+: $379

Motherboard: Asus A8V Deluxe VIA K8T800 Pro chipset: $133

RAM: 1 GB (2x512) Corsair XMS DDR PC3200: $228
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-145-449&depa=1

Hard Drive: Western Digital Raptor 74 GB 10K RPM: $181

Video Card: eVGA nVidia 6800 GT: $392
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-130-203&depa=1

Optical Drives:
Lite-On 8X DVD-RW: $57
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-934&depa=1

Lite-On 52x32x52x16 DVD/CD-RW Combo: $44
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-932&depa=1

Case: Thermaltake Xaser III w/ 420W power supply: $130.50
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-133-126&depa=1

Total Cost: $1544.50

That's almost an extra $200, in which you could buy another Western Digital Raptor hard drive if you need more space, or it will leave you room for an excellent sound card and speakers.

I think I speak for all of us when I say that this set up will kick the piss out of the computer you saw in the advertisement. In fact, I'm getting teary-eyed just thinking about it :)
