i want to upgrade my old computer before giving it to my brother.. he doesnt do any hardcore gaming, but i want to do some upgrades before handing it over to him

my current sys:
amd 64 3200
abit ul8
1 gig ram pc 400 (2x512)
and old 9600pro (my 6600gt died from natural causes)
550 psu

first.. i though if just buying him a sapphire hd 3850 512mb and adding more ram.. but than i read somewhere that the cpu will bottleneck it alot.
according to this list CPU-Upgrade: ABIT UL8 cpu support and features
i should be able to put a amd 64 x2 4800 in there right?
correct me if im wrong.. whole upgrade should run me around $250

but now when i think of it,, i might just get him a xbox360 for a little more

Would a socket 939 4800 work? Yes.
Can you find one? probably not.
If you did find one would it be worth the exorbitant cost? No way.

Get him an xbox or spend $500 on a new mb, cpu, gpu and ram.

why don't you try picking up a aftermarket cooler and try overclocking the cpu and you could also try to find some cheap ddr ram

This computer really isn't worth upgrading drastically (especilly not putting a new cpu in it, well technically it would still be an old cpu) You could do what jake said, or go the xbox route. Personally i think it does not really even need to be upgraded, if it is not for gaming it should do fine for any tasks that he needs done. Does he do any video/photo editing? If so even with a new cpu it would still be pretty slow on this comp.
