Ok I have an Inspiron E1705 I've had it about 2.5 years (ish). The only problem I've ever really had was slowing speeds. Which I fixed (HUGE build up of lint - not dust - in the fans). Now I've got a bigger problem:freak:, at least I think it is. With in the last 24 hours if I try to run more than one program at a time my computer crashes and "screams" at me. The noise I hear is like a very loud digital scramble. As soon as that happens my computer completely locks up and I have to completely power off the machine in order for the sound to stop. At this point I'm thinking about just buying a new laptop as I've kind of out grown this one. But if anyone has any ideas it would be helpful. I really can't afford a new one. Thanks!

so...a new laptop is in the cards then huh? Any thing I can do temporarily to prolong the inevitable?

you might be able to slick it and reload it back to factory specs. Of course you would have to save all your data, as it would format the hard drive. but that might prolong it some what... IMO, not much, but you could try.

You could always try using it in a particularly cold room, I have no idea how much effect that would actually have though.

Try getting a coolilng pad; like Nukem said it sounds like it may be the graphics driver crashing due to the graphics card overheating.

Ok so i'm not running hot. I'm running at like 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit. That's close to 32 degrees c. I'm thinking it may possibly be my hard drive? /sigh...:grind_teeth:

About the Lint/Dust i think the problem was, you're putting the laptop in "dirty" areas, i always put my laptop on top of my lap, CLEAN lap, lol, and when I'm done using my laptop, i just put it on top of a Case for Laptops, to keep lint/dust from coming in. And for the slow speeds, you should have a program called, "Clean Up", it helps me very well, i've had my laptop for nearly 11 months, and its still VERY VERY fast, for more info from me, send me a Pm.

The slow speeds aren't the problem here unfortunately. I've figured that part out and fixed it. My issue right now is the computer completely locks up. Where I can't do anything but shut it down. From what I can tell there is no real trigger. Like I said before I'm not running hot 62 degrees F right now. I can play games like wow with out problem and with out over heating (i play in windowed mode and have I8kfangui to monitor temps). But then with out warning surfing a web page, opening itunes, or even in the middle of playing it will lock up. Now I know you won't believe me but I don't use any p2p programs, no porn on here (i keep all that on my pc :embaressed:) So I don't think think it's viral. I use avg on the recommendation of this site..

Something like this happened on one computer I was working on, not sure if it'll work for you but won't hurt to try:

Uninstall Flash player completely (there should be a removal tool somewhere on Adobe's site), and then reinstall it.
