Hopefully i can simplify it for you;
e8400 is very good best dual core really if you want to go quad then the q9300 or Q9450 but they will be slow single cores but faster when all cores are used. Not all programs are designed to use all cores :)

oh, I didn't realize it wasn't quad core!
I don't understand the differences between q9300, q95450, q9550, etc.
Which one?

Q9300 or Q9450 just pick the one that fits your budget, the bigger the number the faster the processor. The letter indicates quad or dual core so Q = quad E= dual. The first number indicates series so Q6 was the first quad series Q9 is the newest and fastest. The second number indicates stock speed so the q9400 is faster then the Q9300 at stock speeds. The third number indicates ondie memory which makes it faster. With overclocking its normally best to choose the lowest speed of the series and clock it up yourself as that is just what they do in the Intel factory.

why do you suggest the 9450 over the 9550?
need recommendations for the cpu/heatsink/fan/motherboard combo that will go with the parts I've already bought
