How to determine memory type?

I've got a Hewlett-Packard 2710P with awful memory.
Can I buy any old 4GB memory kit - or do I have to be careful of compatibility?
How do you you go about determining this?

Thanks everyone for teaching me all of this stuff. I ask a lot of questions on this forum, but I love learning it all.

CPU-Z will tell you what kind of memory you are running and what motherboard you have.

Memory upgrades, flash media, and usb storage at Crucial.com will tell you what types are compatible with your hp as well.
