USB portable hard drive question

I am thinking about getting one of these USB Portable hard drives for media storage. The only thing is that I will not need the portability of this device since I will only use it on my desktop computer at home. I already have two HD on my computer and just feel that having an extra one with limited use will diminish the possibility of data loss.
Is there any other options out there for storage?? Or will this device work??

yeah, that'll work. there is also tape. I'm assuming this is for backup. Or you could get 2 more and setup a raid config.
