So whats the big deal with 45nm processors and why should I care?
The lower the number the better. A lower number pretty much means that...
- The chip is physically smaller
- Less power is needed to run the processor
- Less heat is produced by running the processor
- Less latency (less time it takes to get from point A to point B)
"45 nanometer" measures the width of the circuits on the chip. A single nanometer is extremely small. Smaller then a strand of your hair, smaller then every blood cell in your body.
How does this work?
Say you are trying to run electricity through a wire. The thicker the metal in the wire, the more electricity it requires to make a full circuit. The heat given off by the processor is proportional to the amount of electricity going though the circuitry. With that saved electricity and heat you are able to do a few things. You could either make the chip run at a higher speed (clock) or you could add more transistors.
