Hi, I'm planning on order the parts sometime next week and I want to make sure everything is compatible before I order. This is the first time I'm building a computer. I will use the computer for gaming like Left 4 Dead and CS, and maybe some solid modeling like SolidWorks and AutoCAD. Budget is around 1000.

Change that to Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit, add the Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer (to keep your cpu cool and ready for overclocking), and get a larger hard drive if needed, then I'd say you're golden.

Yep, vista home premium 64 bit, and spend a few extra bucks on a 640aaks instead of the 250.

do I need any thermal compound to build this?

if you plan on overclocking then get some artic silver but if not then paste will come with the cooler and should be fine, although it's only $5

mx2 or tx2 is better than arctic silver these days. Cheaper and doesnt require a burn in.
