How good is a Phenom 9600?

A 2.7ghz dual core can multitask just fine.

The older phenoms, especially the tlb affected ones really underperformed even with the 4 cores.

I own a 9600BE, it handles multiple threads loads better than a dual core. Especially if you manage your programs properly (when you have multiple intensive programs, run each program on certain cores)

in single threaded programs, a dual core would be better.
but the 9600BE can handle itself very well when you have a lot of different threads open.

It's not worth it for the extra 30 bucks, the x2 7750 would be more than suitable. Buying an older phenom for any more money that that would be a waste.

Like Hikari said, the X2 7750+ will suffice.

9600 BE is just slow. So you will get more raw performance out of the dual core.
