vista ram question

It's not strange at all. Vista uses around 30-40% of memory to do stuff while it's idle. Stuff like prefetch and such.

Also, turning off the search indexing can save a lot of memory.
 
Vista uses that much RAM because it is built to 'anticipate' what applications you are going to use at what times. So it can know what to load within RAM before you actually even open the program.
