can't get ethernet controller installed

i have a dell dimension 8250
i did a fresh xp install b/c my comp was going to ****
completely formatted the hard drive....

and i installed xp again, and also all the drivers discs i could find that i still have


however when i go to
my computer
manage
system tools
device manager
other devices

it shows ethernet controller is missing.... with a giant annoying ?

i have downloaded and installed
broadcom diag utility- netxtreme gigabit ethernet
broadcom driver- netxtreme gigabit ethernet
intel diag utility- 10/100 LOM
intel driver- 10/100 LOM

i was able *to my knowledge* complete installation on the first three

however when i downloaded the last one, i went to install

unzipped the file and it took me to install directions for xp
which is what i am running

but then it says i gotta have the disk inserted to install the program
so it's kinda like the download from dell is only a readme file

i'm begging you guys don't give up on me like other forums... i gotta get this desktop working again....

but those are all the steps i have taken so far

Are you sure that the chipset driver is installed? If not, it can be found here.

How about running a little everest home which will tell us which of the choices dell gave you for possible onboard ethernet it actually is.

Drivers and Downloads

Should be those drivers right there. According to Everest you have a Dimension 8250 and searching thru the Dell website those are the drivers they have for the network device.
