Can I fix a dead USB flash drive?

I lost two Cruzer flash drives to an internal card reader with a bad USB port (probably connected wrong to the motherboard). Windows XP gives a "USB device not recognized" error. With Mac OS X, it blinks a few times and does nothing, but there are some errors in the dmesg output:

If the stick is fried, there's nothing you can do.

You can check that all four pin connections on the tip are attached to the drive.

Yeah, and make there isn't a broken USB port stuck in it.
