Can I fix a dead USB flash drive?

I lost two Cruzer flash drives to an internal card reader with a bad USB port (probably connected wrong to the motherboard). Windows XP gives a "USB device not recognized" error. With Mac OS X, it blinks a few times and does nothing, but there are some errors in the dmesg output:
