i want a small hdd for my os's. could i get like a 30gb for both ubuntu and xp then use my 160gb for everything else? and if so what small cheaper hdd would be recommended??

If you find a decent deal on a WD 36.6GB Raptor 10 RPM Drive, that would be a decent buy..

There's also a 500gb Samsung Drive for like $55 I remember seeing on slickdeals.net

i dont want to partition a large hdd.... if i had my os on a seperate drive then if i have an os failure or a hdd crash i dont lose everything..

What if your drive crashes that holds all the data?

Why not get an external for backup or do RAID 1 setup?

If you have OS failure you won't lose the data on the other partitions, just on the OS partition.
