I have some Tuniq TX-2 Cooling Thermal Compound.
What's the best way to clean the old paste off?
Will alcohol work without damage?
I have some avionics cleaning compound but I am hesitant to use it.

It's best to use a coffee filter and dab a little of it in alcohol and just rub the paste off. Coffee filters are lint free, and works very well.

I have always used coffee filters and isopropyl alcohol.

Coffee filters are lint free which is why the are used.

Personally I just rub with some paper kitchen towel like bounty until it appears nicely polished. Don't do it often enough to warrant getting a bottle of iopropyl alcohol and I am not wasting good vodka.

isopropyl alcohol < 1.50cents

This is how I do it.

Take as much thermal compound off using a credit card etc etc

Taking as much I can get off using papertowels

Dabbing iso alcohol on the end of a clean papertowel

Wiping the whole heat spreader down.

Repeat the process until no "grey matter" is present on the paper towel.

And wiping down AGAIN with optics safe towelette or equiv. (you can get them at eyeglass shops or some computer stores.)
