Q9550 or E8600?

Umm.. the E8600 will OC to like 5GHz, and the i7 920 wil OC to like 4.4GHz, but you should get the i7, because any single application that's like double threaded shouldn't even need like 4.5GHz.

ya and the e8600 clocks worse clock for clock... and oc to 5.0ghz? not for everyday use on air its not...

the i7 920 at 2.66 ghz is as fast as a qx9770 at 3.2ghz... thats telling you something...

i7:setup:

Newegg.com - MSI X58 Platinum LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards

Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS3 3GB (3 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

Newegg.com - Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

total cost = $644.00

only question is, will it work well with SLI 800GT, and can this board overclock the ram to 1600 mhz? or should i go with the 1333 ram?

here is the quad price and setup:

Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

Newegg.com - ASUS P5N-D LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards

Newegg.com - G.SKILL PI Black 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

need 2 of the ram packs above so double the price..

total = $549.00

what would you do?

intel i7 920
msi x58 board
3 gb ddr3 1333 or 1600 mhz (if mb i selected is overclockable??)

$644.00

or

intel core2quad Q9550
asus 750i nforce SLI
8 GB ddr2 800 mhz

$540.00

the only 3 questions are:

question 1: will that i7 msi board support 1600 memory or will i have to overclock my 1333 memory?

questions 2:even tho the Q9550 setup has 8 gb of memory will the i7 still be faster?

question 3:is the i7 solid? or is it like other new stuff not stabe? cause i know the quad is stable.....

other than that i think that 100 bucks is worth it :D

i think y'all might agree...:D

i just saw that the i7 is pretty much faster than all the core2 extremes other than the i7 extreme

i7>>>>>>>>>>>>core2 extreme?

wow!

EDIT: i just would use it with windows xp SP3, because i have SP3 on my laptop and i it boots up in 20 seconds with my core2duo...T7300!!

it shuts down in 8 seconds LOL

not too mention i have the beta vista theme and it looks even better than vista and runs smoother too....

so i will be running xp for sure! what do you guys think of that idea?

ya the lowest i7 extreme is superior to the fastest core2quad

i have an i7... it is solid.. i've been pushing it (nowhere near its limit) since the day i've got it

and the msi platinum says it supports sli on its website... but the box itself does not say.. and does not come with an sli bridge

and difference between 8 and 3 gb's... the only time you'd notice is if you were doing some serious multi tasking

that being playing a game while ripping something, burning cd's and all that kinda crap at once

but honestly, i do it w/ 3gb just fine

i would much rather have a nice new SOLID foundation with room to upgrade.... rather than something old that is at its limits....

you always have more time to upgrade

how come some games the quad and e8500 do better than the i7920 even when the i7920 is overclocked? it only gets equal or slightly better at very very high resolutions?

oh will i ever have compatibility issues with software going with the i7 920?

from what i can tell i7 920 OC is >>>>>>>. core2 extreme any model except Qx9770!!

is that about right?

driver updates from the games or from intel for the bios and windows?

what about cooling heatsink and cpu fan, the newegg one has no backplate?

where can i find a push clip one like the lga-775 ones?
