I currently have:

Q9550 @ 3.8 w/ 1.27v idle 36-39 core temps
x48 Rampage extreme
ocz reaper 4 GB 1600 ddr3 ram

Thinking about selling this set up and upgrading to x58 set up

i7 920 @ 2.66 (dunno what type of oc I can get)
x58 rampage extreme II
gskill 6GB 1600 ddr3 ram

My current set up brand new off newegg is worth 1065 dollars w/ the cpu cooler.

a i7 set up cost 980 bucks without an aftermarket cpu cooler.

I feel like I could sell my current set up for a reasonable price and purchase a new i7 set up without spending much extra cash.

Is it worth the upgrade?

i have heard of people noticing a big diff between the c2q and the core i7's. i would say it is worth it. and expect to hit 4ghz on the core i7

I don't think its worth it, unless you doing heavy multithreaded applications, that Q9550 @ 3.8GHz will be fine. 4GHz is not guaranteed with an i7 920, not everyone can get to 200 BCLK.

well there will be 8 core cpu's with core i7. so upgrading now prepares you to future proof. and the current core i7 do hyperthreading so 4x2=8 logical cores.

There is no future proofing, even the months before i7 was released, sandy bridge is being worked on, or already works. Stick with the Q9550 until it no longer satisfies you.
