I have an 8600gt 256mb right now.

Just wondering if it was worth starting to look at upgrading? Should I look for 512 or 1gb?

Budget would be $75-$125.

Would I be able to get anything in that price range to see significant performance?

I mostly watch movies and play some games. Maybe even begin the transition to HD?

Would be much appreciated if someone could point out some good cards.

You can get an HD 4830/9800GT/HD 4670/8800GS[9600GSO]

Which would dominate your 8600GT

If you get an 8[9]800GT, you might want to consider buying the AKIMBO Cooler for it, since it runs quite hot (or buy the AKIMBO version of it) or any dual-slot version of the 9800GT

according to these charts the 4830 is not beat by the 9800gt
InsideHW - ATi Radeon HD 4830 512MB vs. nVIDIA GeForce 9800GT 512MB

dont know how reliable that site is but i am looking for more reviews

So is this before or after the whole fiasco about the too little SIMDs enabled on the HD 4830?

As far as I know, most games are equal with nVidia doing better in games that support Geforce PhysX and Crysis and AMD doing better in games like GRID optimized for their architecture..
