very very few laptops offer this.

I would say 90% of the laptops out there have the gpu soldered on.

Woohoo, my laptop card is class 5! Dude, according to this, the 3870 is class one, quite a ways above the 9600M GT. Wow, that actually makes Alienware's new M17 a very good base gaming laptop and at $1400 it is even reasonably priced!

According to this list the mobility x1400 that I've had for years in my thinkpad t60 is better than the newly released mobility hd 3470? That doesn't make any sense.

No, the higher it is, the better. Class 1 = high end, Class 2 = Mid-Range - High-End, etc.
