No... the 9800GT is slower than the HD 4830, which is the closest competitor to the 9800GT, the HD 4850 beats the 9800GTX and ties with the 9800GTX+

All 3 outperform the 9800 GT's and the 3870. So pick the one with the better cooler I suppose.

I had an okia (340 watts) psu for over 5 years.....

If there is one part to NEVER get a crappy one, it's the power supply. It can potentially damage a lot of other components as well.

A quality power supply is THE most important part in the computer. A cheap one will often have inflated amperage ratings. low quality components that can and will fail. And often times when they do fail, they take out a lot more than just themselves.

Find someone selling a used power supply and but that. I recently purchased a PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750W for $70 shipped to my door.

Deals are out there.
