The reason why i'm asking is because when burning a DVD my computer basically locks up - i cant really multitask at all because it seems as if the burning process is eating up ALL system resources.

This is a freshly formatted harddrive and OS and the drive has been defragmented etc.

Computer specs:
Intel E6400
Asus P5B deluxe wifi
4gb 2x2gb G Skill DDR2-1000
NEC/Optiarc SATA Dvd burner
XP Pro 64bit

using Nero 9 to burn DVD's - also locks up when using DVD decrytper to burn DVD's.

Anyone have any idea on this?

Yes DMA mode needs to be enabled for IDE devices. There isn't DMA settings SATA devices that I know of. Check for programs that have high cpu usage. The lockups may caused by a 32bit program on a 64bit OS issue. Try other burning software.
