Gunbound. Freeware?

Is Gunbound really free-for-play? I know the software is free but can you play it for free or do you have to pay?

Its free, they do have an option to buy "avatars" which is armor and clothing for your characther that add strength and other capabilities.

You dont have to buy them, you can buy them with the gold you earn after a match is won.
