I'm working on a friends older dell...it has 2 CD drives one for reading and one for writing apparantly. Anyway, neither is working properly, and get a code 19 error when trying to install. this corresponds to a registry problem. I read into this online and the typical fix is to delete the lower and upper filters. I did this, however am still stuck with the same problem. I also read that vista (although im running xp) had a problem due to itunes that lead to this, i updated itunes, but problem is still not fixed. There is no other cd-burning software on the pc...I cant think of anything else to try, thus, i am here.

Are they even showing up in Device Manager or Disk Management? Trying to edit the registry won't do anything if by not working you mean not showing up.

They show up in device manager, only they dont install correctly (error Code 19). I have tried every install and uninstall combination, to no avail. I have also tried the popular Code 19 fix (deleting the upper and lower filters) which also does not work.

Any other ideas? I have tried registry repair software which also did not work...can I copy the registry from another computer and put it in there (for the CD drive only)?

You can copy the registry files but only for either a generic CD drive that will work with yours or if that exact drive was previously in another computer and you copy those files from it. Doesn't hurt to try it out.

tried installing other cd registry items, and tried uninstalling itunes....neither worked....any other ideas?

is there any added value to physically taking the cd drives out and then back in?

bios seems to be recognizing them fine, just as i would expect it to be anyway...doesnt give any erros, nothing out of the ordinary and lists what the drives are.

Can someone possibly give me the registry contents for their cd drives, preferable from a dell...i have an amd and did a test where i deleted their keyboard registry info, then loaded mine, and it seemed to work. So i think if i had the registry info from a similar enough dell it would work....
