I think that if possible (funding/hosting and whatnot) that Tech Forums should get a ventrilo server, like a 50 or 100 man server. I think since this community is large, and is very close, it would be fun and helpful. People could just hang out and talk, play games, and get instant live support from other people too. It could be a great way to expand the community, and bring it up another notch. What do others think?

(Sorry if someone's already suggested this or something )

There was a community funded Vent server that spun off an became ToV.

I would like to see a vent server with the TF name but at the moment I believe there are more pressing concerns.

ToV stands for Tech On Vent - it's a spin off from tech forums founded by some of the members who are no longer active with a few exceptions, look at Dr.IP's sig an you will find a link i believe.

The more pressing concerns atm are the avatar issues, an attached files. There is a few more minor ones but I am sure they will come right when we get the others fixed. There is a slight issue that I am hesitant to talk about but it's not directly a VB problem.

The main reason is because it was already done with no success.

As you can see this is a very popular subject and b1gapl has tried to create this and it failed. There was no activity. No sense in pouring money into it if it wasnt going to be used.

I understand where you're coming from. Maybe if there's just some ground rules on hijacking the vent and leaving, that could be prevented. And ventrilo servers aren't too expensive these days, maybe if a bunch of people put in a few bucks a month, we could get one, and nobody could claim ownership. Just a thought, because I think this would be an awesome idea as long as it stays a tech forum vent.

Thats almost what happend with ToV, I think if it where to happen again it would be best if it was OWNED by TF to stop any funny stuff getting pulled. I was going to set one up for the mods only a while back but i got massivly side tracked by other things, most of them shiney...

Well first we would have to get approval from Larry as he owns the Tech-Forums name. Also if no one claims ownership of the Vent server who do we make admins? In that same line of thinking why them? Who sets the ground rules and yet again why are they choosen to create these rules for the Vent server and no one else?

Having no one clamin ownership actually makes it tougher to get it working cause you get the bickering over why a select group of people have the right to run it over others.

Not to mention it cant have the Tech-Forums name cause Larry would never go for it.

Also forgot to add that it would require a Mod on there 24/7. If that is the same set of Mods that we have here at TF then it would be impossible. As it is hard enough for us to have a Mod on here every hour. Let alone trying to have the Mod cover TF and the Vent server at the same time if they were the only one available at that time.

I think it would work fine under the TF name. If it's made as an official service, you could have the same moderation team, same rules, same ownership. It could also be possible to add some moderators just for vent or something like that. Most of the people around here seem to be pretty mature, I doubt anything drastic would happen in vent.

It would be up to Larry about the name. While I doubt he would have a problem with it on a publicity level, it would be an entirely different issue on a responsibility level. A forum is a written medium, and can be moderated. Ventrilo is live and cannot.

The current mod team, while bigger now than it has ever been, still has its hands full at times. We currently have over 45500 members registered, with about 500 or so active... and that is a lot of people. Not all of them bother to follow the forum's rules or any other rules for that matter. Turned loose in an environment that cannot be controlled it could easily get ugly. Like Mak said, it is hard enough to have mods available at all hours now, much less sitting with a headset on.

I won't post my thoughts on the maturity level. Needless to say, I have seen what can happen on Ventrilo when there is no restraint, and it is not pretty.

I have toyed with the idea of putting up my own Vent or TS server, but I just can't justify the cost or be there to keep it clean.

Besides, Tech-Forums would be more likely to use a chat feature than a voice one, but we have found that that does not work, either.
