Here is the deal - I am looking to build a computer and I will need to run Vista - My main concern is for the computer to be quick. I will purchase a graphics card later, but for right now I just need a CPU, PSU, Mother board, and RAM. Any suggestions the budget is keeping all purchases total under $800. Including a graphics card under $1,100.

Can I at least get some help on what I should start with?
Thanks to all who reply

So I assume you have a PCI-e GPU or need an IGP [Integrated Graphics Processor]

- e8400
- Corsair 650tx
- Biostar I45
- 4gb DDR2 Kit

(This is just under $500 for just these parts.. so I'll throw my GPU recommendation even though you said you just need that other stuff..)

Vernong, you obviously seem like you know alot. I appreciate your help... will you take a look and see if all seem compatable? Right now I am running ACPI UNIprocessor with an Intel Celeron 1.70 GHz. I have a Radeon 9000 series gfx card. and 1 GB of RAM... Will I see a big difference with what I am looking at now---

If you were to throw in a graphics card between $150 and $300 what would you buy. I just really want the computer to run smooth wheter I am on the internt or playing games!

that e8400 4870/50 rig will crazily outperform your celery rig xD( good one nagasama). that is prob the best configuration you can get speed wise, but chnage the a-data set to a pair of gskill PI's. $10 more, but the timings on the a-data are pretty loose. these are 4-4-4-12 at only 1.8v, great ram.

I stand by that HD 4870 recommendation from the last post

Change your RAM to that, 4-4-4-12 @ DDR2 800 is better than 5-5-5-18 @ DDR2 800 (Lower is better on the timings and latency)

game-wise, you will probably faint when you see how that build performs next to your old celery :D
< 150 : hd4850
< 300 : hd4870 or gtx260

Ya, coming from an 8 year old Pentium 4 to an X2 4600+ I noticed a huge jump, and you'll notice an even bigger one!

!

You will notice a HUGE Performance increase lol.

I stand by that HD 4870 recommendation from the last post

Shouldn't we ask what resolutions he games at first? No point going with a 4870 if a 4850 would perform just as well.

Oh ya, I assumed he already has a big ole 19'' CRT like I did with my P4 (before it crapped anyways.. ) my bad

ok so I bought the following rig parts:

and when I got the Bio Star MB - it looked as though when I went to place the processor once I removed the pin cap - There was the traditional pin missing from the socket (upper right side if you will, and then it looked like two or three pins to the left of that 2 pins were missing. This seems like it could be a problem, but i just discovered it today? Will it be an Issue????

compare it to this:

if the missing pins are the same as in the pic ur fine.
