What are the benefits of the new socket 939. I remember hearing something about the ram and noticed that the socket 940 supports Registered ECC ram whereas the 939 doesn't mention anything about ECC. Does error correction slow down the ram? would the 939 be fasters? Just wanted to know what the benefits of the new 64's running on the 939 socket were.

Benefits of the 939 is Dual Channel Capabilities, upgradable, and does not require ECC/Buffered/Registered memory.

So basically you can get regular non-ECC ram and put it in duel channel? Didn't know you couldn't duel channel with the 940 so that is cool. Any other changes?

not meaning to steal your thread, but ive also been looking into getting either a 754 or a 939, and what exactly is duel channel ram, and how will it be upgradable?

Didn't know you were comparing the 940 to 939. Both have Dual Channel capabilities, just that one of them uses expensive slow ram.

Dual Channel is DDR motherboard's chipset that's designed with two memory channels instead of one. Dual Channel handles memory-processing more efficiently by utilising the theoretical bandwidth of the two modules, thus reducing system latencies. In other words, it increases performance.

When i meant upgradable, i meant there would be more cpus made for that particular socket.

the only amd socket that does not use dual channel is the 754(out of the socket A, 754, 939, and the 940)...the 939 socket is going to be the amd socket of the future...well sort of, it's the up and coming socket that is going to be used alot. just stick with a 939 socket so you don't have to worry about all of that ECC ram and stuff.

also note- if your looking to buy a Atholon 64 939 cpu, u might wont to wait till about the end of this year, when thy release the older 64's in 939 format... 64 2800+ to about 64 3400+ is only avalible in 754 right now, thy will be cheaper and perform better when thy come out on Socket 939
