So merge the partitions then open and edit the boot.ini to show only one partition and reboot, right?

If you use Acronis yes. GParted is a LiveCD so you would have to use teh XP CD. Go into the Recovery Console and fixboot and fixmbr. Thsoe commands should get XP working again.

if he merge that 8mb (not gb) part he will have an unbootable partition and a jack up partition. leave it alone

no it's an 8 gig partition, but he decided to just leave it be for now.
