how much exactly does RAM effect gaming? what do you personally think is more important for gaming, ram or processor?

Well thats not really a simple question, and it also really depends on the game. Its also comparing to parts of the system which are important and well, its not really a fair comparison.

The cpu is the most important, but a balanced system will get the best results, for exapmle, a high end quad core with 512mb is gonna perform poorly because it doesnt have enough ram. 2GBs of ram is about standard these days. 1GB is too little for most newer games, but ok for games a few years old. 4GBs and above has small, debatable performance gains. Basically 2GB should be fine.

The speed of the ram is also important, as are the timings to a lesser extent. The aim is to get the fastest ram with the lowest timings, within reason. These days standard is DDR2 800Mhz ram with timings of 4-4-4-15.

did u just say cpu is most important for gaming...

its called a "graphics" processing unit (gpu) for a reason.. lol that is the main factor of gaming

as far as ram goes.... the quantity is important for gaming, not so much the speed.. 2 gb's should get you by with everything but 4 should keep you going for a while

and of course cpu has its play in gaming as well, not so much as a gpu... but you do need a decent cpu to keep up with your gpu processing

agreed, easy question CPU over ram, but over both GPU. but he is right, 2gb of ram at 4-4-4-12/15 ddr800 will keep you going but since ram is so cheap people get 4gb which is alot faster for loading up windows/game etc but doesnt have a impact really over 2gb for framerate. timings speeds depend. myself im not in a rush to overclock my ram , just tighten the timings, if you consider the fsb ratio its not really that important over 800mhz.

but yeah a good gpu is what matters the most for gaming.
