was not sure where to post this question up...

do all home retail dvd burners also burn cds and read cd/dvd? i got a offer to buy one from an acquaintance.

Also, usually when you buy a burner/drive, does it come with its own SATA cord?

and also, does the quality of SATA cables matter much? better SATA cable=better transfer or soemthing like that. just curious

pretty much if it burns dvds it burns cds, they will be labled like combo drive or something, if ur not sure look on the box/ product description

if u buy a retail(box version) it will come with a sata cable, if u buy oem(comes in anti static bag only, no box) it wont come with a cable

a sata cable is a sata cable, there isnt any good or bad, well unless its made horibly and a connector breaks or something... but thats pretty uncommon.

yes dvd burners read and write cd's and SATA performs better than IDE because it reads data much faster.

false, IDE and sata are pretty much identical. besides physical appearance there is no performance gain at all. any sata cable will do fine. if your not sure whetehr it burns both look ur the specs on the manfu website, but i highly doubt it would only burn dvd's it should take cd's too.

Optical drives don't pass information fast enough to fully utilise Ide bandwidth let alone SATA1/2. Its the same with harddrives, just because the technology is available in the cable doesn't mean the components are upto scratch

it is true, but as we all know there is a reason why they invented this things as they have a purpose.they wont implement it in the market if there is no advantage between the old and the new technology.(why did you think they release ps3?if ps2 is on par with the technology.)2 advantage of using SATA cables is
1.)faster data speed PATA supports upto 150mbps ,SATA1 as i remember is only slightly faster than PATAor IDE and SATA2 supports upto 300mbps.
2.)due to smaller cables you will have a better airflow in your casing

But the cable speed is invalidated as the components can't run that quickly maybe with flash memory we will push the Sata speed but not with standard mechanical components. The cable size isn't that much different just get a knife and make the cable rounded with some tape easily done and good for those optical drives
