I am looking at buying either one of these cards to replace my EVGA8800 GTS 512mb, I want to stick with the nvidia cards. I have a monitor that supports 1080p HD with a HDMI port that i would like to go through.
XFX 9800GX2 Newegg.com - XFX PVT98UZHDU GeForce 9800 GX2 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

MSI GTX 280 Newegg.com - MSI N280GTX-T2D1G OC GeForce GTX 280 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

both those cards will do u good, it really depends on if u want to spend the extra money so u can get the benefits of the 280, cuz in some games(non sli optimized) a 9800gx2 will perform like a 9800gtx.

but overall i would get a 4870, but if u want nvidia u want nvidia...

well i would go the gx2, has the best performance for the price assuming u buy from evga b-stock ($229) . but then agen is doesnt have the Physx, but then also agen, it doesnt really seem to impact yet, 9800x2 gets better than the gtx 280 in alot fo games. i dont really like the idea of dual gpu's so id ptob go a 4870. but to get equal performance as the 4870/gx2 u need a gtx 280, but a highly o/c gtx 260 can be as good as them aswell.

so prob go a gx2 from evga. or a 4870 otherwise

If you can afford the 280, then get it. The performance increase from your card to a 4870 would not be huge, i mean probably 20-30%. The 280 would probably see 30-45% better.

the 4870 beats the gtx 280 sumtimes, its fair to say overall the gtx 280 is better, but overall the 4870 kills it in price/performance

I was going to get a 9800gx2 or a 280gtx but I turned over to the darkside myself and got a 4870.. I have been an nvidia guy my whole life, time to test new waters.. So I understand where you are coming from wanting to stay with nvidia.
