Laptop Screen Broken?

How do you know he isn't hooking it up via dvi or hdmi?

Please don't play the smart-*** game with me, I don't have the patience...
 
Yeah, not always. The protocols used to interface with the internal LCD (LVDS), DVI port (don't remember what it's called lol), and VGA (analog) are all different. If these protocols are implemented in software via the firmware or video BIOS, they could've been corrupted by a BIOS mod. Unlikely, but possible. My desktop monitor gets corrupted under DVI occasionally and the drivers have an alternate DVI method to fix it (sometimes helps, sometimes doesn't).
