Disk Cleanup on XP Home

When I try to run the Disk Cleanup utility on Windows XP Home Edition (Service Pack 1), my CPU pretty much grinds to a halt; when I go to Device Manager it's at 100% usage. It's a 2.17ghz AMD Athlon XP 3000+.
I've defragged very recently, I've ran my McAfee Virus Scan (latest patch) which found nothing, likewise for my AOL Spyware Protection utility.

Any suggestions?

Not unusual for Disk Cleanup to grind when its calculating space that could be freed by compressing old files.

My old 80 Gig harddrive would have the disc cleanup stop. I'd have to restart the comp to get it to back off my PC usage. It only did that when I had 45% harddrive space used. I would run defrag first, then cleanup temp internet files manually, then cleanup would work. XP home too.

try disabling some background non essential programs and clean one area at a time.
